Silja's story

Hey :)

here comes a abbreviated summary of my last few years...

I was born in Germany, but I am also a proud citizen of the UK (that's because my dad is from Manchester).
When I was 16 I went to boarding school in France for a year. After graduating from school I went to Spain (wonderful Salamanca) for one year, as I was not sure what I wanted to study and learning Spanish seemed a nice option.
When coming back, I decided to go for Chemistry, so I spent one year studying Bio-Chemistry in München. It turned out to be not quite my thing (...I got annoyed with spending days in the lab doing titrations ...), so I changed my major to Social and Cognitive Psychology at the international Jacobs University in Bremen.

I had a great time at Jacobs, and did a lot of work in the Psychology Lab there. My professor Arvid Kappas (http://www.jacobs-university.de/hss/akappas/) is doing research on emotions and cognition. In one experiment we tested if physiological feedback from the body can influence emotional judgments of images (it seems it does!).
During my studies I also did two internships, both at the Max Planck Institute: once in Leipzig (2007) with the Tomasello group, and once in Berlin (2008) with the Gigerenzer group.

My interest in research are very wide, but most of all, I am interested in the bridging of physiological changes (in body and/or brain) and their effects on psychological perception, leading to action. For example, if X happens in your brain, how does this translate into what you feel and do?
In this context, I think studying certain psycho-pathologies can shed light. During my studies here at the UvA I would love to get involved in a research project on Autism, Perception & Interaction.

So far, the Brain & Cogntive Science Master seems to be a good path to take towards my research interests. Oh, and I love Amsterdam :)
